What Is Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate?
Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate is a mild anionic surfactant and emulsifying agent commonly used in cosmetic products.
It is made by Sodium Glutamate and Stearoyl Chloride through chemical reaction.
Sodium stearoyl glutamate is derived from L-Glutamic acid and natural fatty acid (stearoyl acid), an anionic surfactant with a pH similar to human skin and serves as an effective ingredient for creating stable emulsions, which are essential in many skincare and haircare formulations.
It is a free-flowing white powder and a very mild, hypo-allergenic, non-comedogenic cleansing agent with exceptional ecological safety thanks to high biodegradability.
It is compatible with a wide range of other ingredients, including inorganic/organic electrolytes, UV-reflecting solids, polar to nonpolar oils, and preservatives.

Benefits of Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate
The primary purpose of Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate in cosmetic products is to provide cleansing, hair conditioning, skin conditioning, and emulsifying functions.

  • Cleansing: As a surfactant, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate aids in the removal of dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin’s surface without causing excessive dryness or irritation.
Its gentle cleansing action helps maintain a clean and healthy complexion without causing excessive dryness or irritation, making it suitable for various skin types, including sensitive skin.
  • Skin Conditioning: Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate helps improve the skin’s texture and overall appearance by providing hydration and nourishment.
Its conditioning properties contribute to softer, smoother, and more supple skin, enhancing the skin’s overall feel and look.
  • Hair Conditioning: In addition to its skin benefits, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate also serves as a hair conditioning agent. It can help detangle, soften, and manage hair, making it easier to comb and style.
This conditioning effect promotes healthier, shinier, and more manageable hair.
  • Emulsifying: Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate acts as an emulsifying agent, ensuring that the oil and water-based ingredients in cosmetic formulations mix effectively.
In combination with similar surfactants (Sodium cocoyl glutamate or Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate),
it potentiates action by acting as a co-surfactant and allows producing paste from foaming cleansers and other cleansing applications, improving the sensory profile, consistency, and distribution.
This ability to create stable emulsions contributes to the uniform and pleasant texture of various skincare and haircare products, improving their application and distribution on the skin or hair.

Usage of Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate
Concentration levels of Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate in cosmetic products can vary, depending on the specific formulation and desired properties.
It is not typically available as a stand-alone ingredient for consumer use, but rather is commonly found as part of a broader formulation in various skincare and haircare products, including facial cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and creams.
