Polyvinylpyrrolidone K90 (PVP K90)

PVP K90 acts as a film former and thickener. Forms hard, glossy, transparent and clear films. Produces clear formulation. Offers greater setting power and stronger adhesion. It is preferred where viscosity is critical in applications,example, pump sprays. Suitable for water based formulations. Used in skin care, oral care and hair styling applications like gels, mousses, liquid hair setting preparations etc.

●Good Solubility
It is soluble in water, but also in various organic solvents such as alcohols, carboxylic acids, amines and halogenated hydrocarbons. Solubility is limited only by its own viscosity. The ability of PVP K90 to dissolve in various organic solvents makes it widely used in the production of water treatment membranes, and it is an excellent membrane porogen.

●Surface activity
The molecule of PVP K90 is a butyrolactam structure, which has the ability of hydrophilic and polarophilic groups. There are also lipophilic. The molecular structure of PVP K90 makes it surface active and can be used as a polymer surfactant.

●Film-forming and hygroscopicity
PVP K90 can be poured or coated into a film from a solution of water, methanol, ethanol, chloroform or dichloroethane. The formed film is colorless, transparent, hard and bright, and the solvent has no effect on the formed film. PVPK30 has strong hygroscopicity, its hygroscopic ability is weaker than carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), but stronger than polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Once PVP K90 absorbs moisture, it will show a certain degree of cohesion. The hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content of PVP K90 is about 1/3 of the relative humidity.

●Complexity

PVP K90 is a polymer with high “dissolving” ability, which enables PVP to form solid complexes with many substances, especially compounds containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino and other active hydrogen atoms.
